In China, death is a great taboo and, as such, is not considered a terribly good career move for young Chinese job seekers.

ALMOST HEAVEN is a feature-length documentary. It takes a tender look at a group of young budding morticians as they learn about life and death. We observe the smallest details of their lives as they train and work together – their laughter, their tears, their fears, their hopes and their dreams. This is set against the backdrop of grieving families saying goodbye to their loved ones and the physical and clinical reality of the job.

This film follows the story of the new girl in the morgue, 17-year-old Ying Ling, as she joins the other apprentices and begins her training. We follow her as she learns and makes friends with the other trainees right until she finally begins working as a fully qualified mortician.

ALMOST HEAVEN is a spiritual and allegoric composition on death and the fragility of life but also a reflection on what it is like to be young and alive.
